| GRAIN - NON CONTROLLED CROPS /
OTHER CROPS |
 |
 |
The non-controlled
crops produced in
Namibia are yellow maize, sorghum, groundnuts, sunflower,
beans, cotton and lucerne.
The Agronomic Board does not hold production and marketing statistics of crops other than controlled crops i.e. commercially produced white maize, wheat and mahangu. Since the commercial white maize, wheat and mahangu producers are obliged to register with the Board in terms of the Act, the Board
is in the position to monitor the production and marketing processes
of these crops. Informal figures on hectares planted, harvests and
prices (if available) could be obtained. |
| |
| The other crops
produced in Namibia are: |
 |
| • |
Yellow Maize: this crop was deregulated
in 1994. For traditional reasons, Namibians do not consume yellow maize
meal and this crop is planted for stock feeding purposes only. |
 |
 |
| • |
Sunflower: Is planted in the commercial
areas exclusively. Sunflower seed is only cultivated under dry-land
conditions and was, due to certain production problems i.e. erratic
rainfall and damages done by birds and game, not produced to its full
potential. Read More >>> |
 |
| • |
Cotton: In a semi-arid environment such
as Namibia, the focus is on diversification and producers concentrate
on crops suitable for Namibian conditions. Read More >>> |
 |
| • |
Groundnuts: Is planted by in the summer
by commercial farmers under dry-land conditions. This crop is usually
exported to South Africa or sold mostly on the informal market. A small
facility also produces peanut butter. |
 |
| • |
Sorghum: This crop is planted both in
the communal and the commercial sectors although on a very small scale.
In the commercial sector, sorghum is produced under dry-land conditions
for cattle feed exclusively. A Mahangu and Sorghum Task Team was established
as a government initiative (see full details in the Annual Report no
17). |
 |
| • |
Lucerne: Is produced under irrigation
all through the year. These producers have standing contracts to sell
their produce to the dairy producers. |
 |
| • |
Beans: A variety of beans are planted
under dry-land conditions for farmers’ own use as cattle feed.
The green plant is cut as hay and fed to the animals. Beans are also
planted at the Manghetti Dune by the bushman farmers who feed the dry
beans to their goats. |
