| Compared to South Africa,
the Namibian wheat industry is still relatively small. Being a winter
crop, wheat is produced under irrigation and is thus not affected by
Namibia’s erratic rainfall. This crop is normally planted during
June/July and harvested in mid November until early December each year. |

Wheat is produced
at the Naute Project of the Namibia Development Corporation (NDC) near
Keetmanshoop, the Hardap Irrigation Project near Mariental, the Shadi,
Musese, Shitemo and Vungu Vungu Irigation Projects in the Kavango and
smaller quantities are produced in the Otavi, Kombat, Tsumeb
and Abenab areas. The Etunda Irrigation Project in the NCRs planted
15 hectares as field trial which proved to be quite successful.
During the 2009 season, 1,852 hectares of wheat were planted and a total volume of 12,448 tons of wheat were marketed.
The following wheat price and marketing mechanism for 2009 were agreed
