Controlled Agronomy Crops

Although Namibia is one of the driest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, it is still possible to produce staple food grains such as pearl millet (commonly known as mahangu), white maize, and wheat. These grain crops are currently classified as gazetted controlled agronomic crops under the Agronomic Industry Act (AIA) No. 20 of 1992, which is implemented by the Namibian Agronomic Board.

Agronomic crops in Namibia are cultivated under two main systems: rain-fed and irrigation. White maize is produced under both rain-fed and irrigation conditions, while wheat—being a winter crop—is cultivated exclusively under irrigation. Pearl millet and white maize grown under rain-fed conditions are particularly vulnerable to climatic variability, resulting in fluctuating yields.

Grain

Controlled grain crops under the NAB’s jurisdiction are white maize and products thereof, wheat and products thereof, and mahangu and products thereof.
